Myakka River State Park near Sarasota
Sometimes plans made 6 months ago based on what seemed to be
limited choices turn out amazing. Having been able to only book 3 nights at
Myakka River State Park near Sarasota, I was able to get a Saturday night
reservation in a small (30 campsites) at Alafia River State Park. Turns out,
Alafia River SP was formerly a phosphate mine (phosphate, used in fertilizer is
found 10 to 20 feet below the surface) which was turned over to the state once
mining operations ceased. The terrain makes for good mountain biking, and the
SP was very popular. Kris and Darrell rode the River Trail, rated easy. Kris
decided she had enough fun and resorted to riding on paved roads, while Darrell
went and rode all three easy loops. There were also intermediate, difficult and
double Black Diamond trails for those wanting more challenge.
