Clingman’s Dome
After a slow morning routine (aided in part by 45 degrees
outside), we drove to Clingman’s Dome at 6,600 feet elevation. The parking area
was pretty full, and completely full by the time we left. We left the Toyota in
a parking area several miles away and drive up in Sprinty. We did the .5 mile
hike to the observation tower. Even did about 10 feet of the Appalachian Trail.
Our plans to do some other hikes and stay at Elkmont
campground were thwarted by the lack of parking at the trailheads (even for
just the Toyota) and campsites. A lot of other people were out enjoying the
wonderful treasure that is the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Even the
visitor center parking lot was full. So tonight we are in a RV part north of
Pigeon Forge, TN. Got one of the last 9 available sites in a RV Park with 300
sites. Enjoying cell service to catch up and post.
