Course added to Top 5 courses to never play again
We wrapped up our golf/hiking trip. Leaving North Bend State
Park early this morning (partly to dump tanks on the way out, partly to try and
play golf before the rain forecast for the afternoon arrived). Having learned
our lesson, we ignored Google Maps trying to route us out through Cornwallis
(had enough fun yesterday to last a few months at least), we turned east and
made our way to Fairmont, WV. Turned out to be a series of disappointments.
When we arrived at 9am, they weren’t open, despite posted
hours saying they opened at 8am. Then were told they did not have a practice
range, when we specifically asked them when we called for a tee time yesterday
and were told they did. The sign on the pro shop said to treat all bunkers as ground
under repair - a sign of desperation by a golf course in disrepair. And the
bunkers were horrible. The course was also quirky. And the greens were like
putting on sticky paper. We decided by the first hole to not keep score.
On the second hole, it started to drizzle. So much for rain
forecast to start in the afternoon. Continued to play - no doubt the
maintenance crew thought we were nuts. Played 6 holes, and were glad we were
not keeping score, although Darrell did make a birdie on a par 4.
Teed off on the seventh hole, and were greeted with a flash
of lightening and a clap of thunder. Sought shelter. After 45 minutes of hoping
it would pass, we gave up. In that the course made our top 5 courses we won’t
play again (note that we typically play over 60 different courses a year),
perhaps it was meant to be not to play any further and be further disappointed.
As we headed
back to Deep Creek Lake, we crossed over the 22,000 mile mark since we adopted
Sprinty in late-February 2017. And we have 71 nights in Sprinty in 2018.
