David Crockett Birthplace State Park
Another rainy day - a good day to take it easy, made easier as our destination for tonight was only about an hour away. When we made reservations a few days ago, it looked like we might have golf-able weather for today. Alas, our planner confused Elizabethtown, NC with Elizabethtown, TN, and he pulled up the wrong forecast. Instead of enjoying golf-able weather, we had more of yesterday’s weather - cool, breezy and drizzly weather. As today is day one of the Snipe Halloween Regatta at the Atlanta Yacht Club, we recalled that the weather we were having in eastern Tennessee today was similar to what we endured last year sailing the Halloween Regatta.
We spent the morning until almost the noon checkout time snuggled inside Sprinty reading books and doing small chores like doing the write-up of the rally for the Roadtrek International newsletter (Sprinty’s reputation must have leaked out).
About noon, we headed for lunch at a good old fashioned diner in Johnson City, the kind that would have had three calendars on the wall if diners still did calendars (reference “Blue Highways” by William Least Heat-Moon). At the diner, we saw this sign on the wall (in lieu of a calendar?).
After lunch, a few stops for project supplies and groceries, then on to the David Crockett Birthplace State Park Campground in Limestone, TN. After we got checked in, we headed for the Visitor Center where we watched a film made up of excepts from a History Channel show about Davy Crockett. There weren’t too many exhibits to see.
We then got settled into the campground, and Darrell commenced to fixing a cabinet hinge that had pulled loose and making another window covering for the sliding door. The campground has 71 RV sites, and 17 tent sites. While we enjoyed having a pull-through site with hookups, the sites are pretty close together. The campground was decorated for Halloween, and kids were trick-or-treating after dinner.
And an interesting quote to ponder:
