Fairfield Glade

Here is a campfire photo from Tuesday evening at Cumberland Mountain State Park:

Yup - just like most other present day campers, we're enjoying the campfire while catching up with the world on our devices.

Reviewing several weather apps/forecasts, it looked very likely for rain to impact our plan for Thursday and Friday.  So we decided to make the most of the nice weather today to play golf at a course that Matt knew about in Fairfield Glade.  As several mid-morning tee times were blocked off, we got the latest tee time we could - 8:57am.

As Heatherhurst Golf Course was about 30 minutes from the campground, we had to set an alarm for 6am, and took comfort that we were in Central Daylight Time Zone, so it was more like 7am EDT as we had not really adjusted our routines to the new time zone.
We were rolling about 7am to pay a visit to the dump station, as it was our last day on this trip.  As we neared the golf course, it seemed that the Fall colors were better than we had seen in the last couple of days.

Heatherhurst Golf Course has two 18-hole golf courses - the Brae and Crag, which meant that there were lots of golfers there early.  The practice facilities were quite nice, including a large chipping green.  The practice putting green was also nice, and not as fast as the two Bear Trace courses we played this week.  We felt the Bear Trace greens were too fast, so we were looking forward to a more reasonable speed on the greens.

After being humbled by the white tees yesterday, Darrell decided he was playing the gold tees today.  Matt joined Darrell at the gold tees.

All four of us started off with good tee shots.  By the second hole, Kris and I both remarked that we liked this course more than the one yesterday, even if it was more expensive.  It was a quite pretty layout, and the grounds crew was doing a better job at trying to blow leaves off the fairways and greens.  We noted that there were two RV campgrounds nearby (both rated 5 stars), so the idea of a future golf/camping trip to this area was discussed several times.

Darrell and Kris both bogeyed the first hole, Darrell took a two shot lead on the second hole, and Kris answered with a birdie on the third hole to even it up.  Darrell stayed focused, and by the turn, was up by 6 strokes.  Knowing that Kris often mounts a second nine charge, Darrell stayed focused, and birdied the 10th hole, and parring 6 of the last 8 holes to post a score of 77 on the day.  Needless to say, this prompted a chorus about making a stop at Starbucks in Crossville for Darrell to buy Frappecinos all around.  And needless to say, Darrell was quite pleased to be buying today.

After Starbucks, we headed home, choosing blue highways for all but about 15 miles of the trip.  An uneventful trip back.
