Laura S Walker State Park
Today is Veterans Day, a day our nation has set aside to honor. Of the many tributes to veterans, this was one that stood out for us.
Another day, another full day as Sprinty golfs across the country. Because it is a holiday weekend, we made a 11am tee time at The Lakes Golf Course At Laura S. Walker, another of the Georgia State Park Golf Courses. With a 2.5 hour drive from Cordele, we were up early again. It was another cool morning, 45 degrees, with a mostly cloudy, windy forecast for the day. While not as chilly as yesterday, it was almost as raw with the wind.
The drive from Cordele to Waycross took us on a route we drove almost monthly 30 years ago when we lived in Saint Mary’s, GA, and would drive to Atlanta to visit family. US 82 is now 4-lane from Tifton to Waycross, an improvement from when we drove it in the late 1980s. In a couple of the small towns, we could see some new things, but mostly, it was like stepping back in time - rural Georgia, primarily agriculture based.
As we headed east, I turned to Kris and said, “Today, it’s your turn to buy”. When we arrived at the golf course, there were not many people there. Perhaps because it is out in the boonies, maybe the weather. And the practice range was closed, so we got to start early. All the groups in front of us were two-women’s, and could play golf. So we moved at a pretty decent clip.
Kris opened up with two pars on the first two holes, so she was up by two strokes early. We both played well, and Darrell had reduced Kris’ lead to on,y one stroke at the turn. Darrell evened it up early in the second nine, and we were even on almost every hole. We tee-ed off on hole 18 tied for the day. Kris played the hole better, and finished the day one stroke ahead. She must have taken my comment seriously - she had even researched where a Starbucks was in nearby Waycross. Darrell took some consolation in a Grande Caramel Frappuccino. 😀
We both enjoyed the course - and put it on our “do again” list should we be traveling near here again.
A quick stop at the grocery store, then back to the campground. After getting Sprinty settled in the campsite, nicely perched on two stacks of levelers,
we took a hike on one of the nature trails that went around the lake.
Here is a photo of the campground from across the lake.
BTW, it was a little too cool for us to seriously consider swimming anyway.
Levelers? Looks pretty flat to me. Bon voyage on your great 5-month journey!
