Another chilly morning - waking up to 39 degrees. Last night we were dry camping at the Rainbow Plantation RV Park. Which meant we relied on our propane to run the heat. And it did a great job all night.
A surprise benefit to our visit to Rainbow Plantation is that during the winter months, they put on a “Eggs Your Way” breakfast: eggs, sausage or bacon, biscuit, hash browns, orange juice and coffee for $4.50. One of the members who has been coming to this park for 15 or more years recommended we arrive early. We showed up about 7:15 figuring we would hang out till the advertised start time of 7:30. When we arrived, they were already serving. Great breakfast. And since we started early, we were on the road earlier than planned.
We picked Whispering Pines Golf Course in Hurley, MS as our course to play. The reviews were okay, and the price was much better than other options in south Alabama. We picked about 9pm last night, so no tee time reserved. We just showed up, and they put us right behind the groups that were lined up. A fairly wide open course without many ways to get in trouble. Kris made a birdie on the second hole to Darrell’s par, and was up by a stoke. Darrell tied it upon the 6th hole, only to have Kris pick up two strokes on the next hole. Back and forth, we were tied at the turn.
The back nine was similar - make a stroke, give a stroke. Tied up again after 11 holes, 14 holes, and after 17 holes. So the last hole, a par 5 was the deciding hole. Kris played it very well, making par to Darrell’s bogey. And we enjoyed playing in shorts and short sleeves for most of the round.
As we started earlier than planned, we finished earlier than expected. So we went to Plan B for where to camp for the night, Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville, LA. In checking availability last night, the on-line reservation system indicated two sites available (out of 105 sites) for walk-up only (as with most on-line systems, they don’t let you make reservations less than 48 hours in advance). As we had an option C and D, we decided to give it a go. We arrived just after 4pm, and saw quite a line to enter the park. Turns out, all the campers, except us, had reservations, and the non-campers were headed for a wedding at the park. At the check-in desk they had one site left. It was a nice, level pull-through that was perfect for Sprinty.
The campground was full of activity. In addition to all the RVs, there was a sizable Cub Scout troop camping in the primitive camp area (a.k.a. tent area).
And today, Sprinty added Louisiana to his collection of states traveled in, making it 34 states since February 2017. And tonight’s stay will make it 33 states camped in since February 2017.
A cartoon that sort of sums up our current meandering westward:
