Fort Huachuca

Sunday, 16 December

Forecast was for an overcast, chilly, breezy day.  The kind of day you don’t want to be in a hurry to do anything outside.  The kind of day where a post like this:

Seems to be something worth deviating from the travel plan to go find.  Unless you have golf on the brain.

Our destination was a whole 30 minutes from Tombstone, and conveniently, passed by a Walmart for getting groceries.

When we got to Fort Huachuca, an Army base in Sierra Vista, AZ, we headed for the FamCamp, Apache Flats RV Park, to see if they had any sites available for the night.  The RV park has great reviews, and certainly lived up to the reviews.  We found vacant campsites, but the office was closed for the weekend, and no indication on how to do a self-checkin.  We saw a camper out for a walk, and asked her if there was a host.  She told us the camp host left on 1 December.  She and her husband suggested we pick a site and settle up at the office in the morning.

Knowing we could stay at the FamCamp, we headed for the base golf course.  Interestingly, we had to exit the base to get to the golf course.  As the course is open to the public (as most military base golf courses are), they have constructed a different access road so you don’t have to go through the security gate to the base to get to the golf course.

The golf course (and FamCamp) are certainly picturesque, even on an overcast day.

Being a chilly day worked to our favor in that we were able to get on without having made a tee time despite it being a weekend.  After warming up, we start off.  Darrell opened with a birdie to Kris’ par.  Kris tied it up after three holes.  We both played well, with Darrell up by 3 strokes at the turn.  Darrell started off on the back nine with four pars in a row, setting the bar high.  Kris continued to hit her drives well, with one drive over 200 yards.  The breeze picked up towards the end making it chillier, and play was frustratingly slow.  We both felt like our best shots just weren't happening as we got chilled.  And just as we were finishing, it started raining.  After the last ball dropped in the 18th hole, Darrell had honors.

Next up was a visit to the Starbucks nearby on the base to pay up.  With the unexpected rain, we were grateful to have only a couple minutes drive to the base FamCamp for the evening.  Not only were the facilities first-rate, especially for a military FamCamp, the WiFi was nearly Xfinity quality, allowing us to stream the Golf Channel and NFL football.
