Watching Football in the Desert
Sunday, 20 January
Slow start to the morning. Along with the rest of the OOBerFest attendees. Other than walking their dogs, we did not see anyone until about 10am. Kris enjoyed reading her book while Darrell worked on blog posts before the cellular connection deteriorated too badly.
About 11am, we broke out the bikes to wander through more of the Plomosa Road BLM area. There are hundreds and hundreds of RVs gathered here. The majority are Class As and 5th wheels. And organized into all sort of groups. The SOLO, Boomer, and several chapters of Escapees have their groups. Loner on Wheels (LOW) has their group. Likely dozens of other groups, we just did not see an identifying sign.
Just as in the covered wagon days, many of the groups arranged their RVs in circles. A circle the wagons type of arrangement. Only the wagons are RVs now.
Not far from where OOBerFest is we saw the first of many brand groups. We saw a large group of Montana 5th wheels all parked in a circle.
At the Arctic Fox group, we saw a very interesting adaptation to getting water and electrical hookups in the desert. There were about a dozen folks gathered when we came by, all trying to figure out how to apply his solution to their rigs.
We also saw a gathering of Class B+ Leisure Travel Vans. One of the owners we spoke with said they had 24 Leisure Travel Vans gathered last night, and were expecting over 40 to attend.
One of the many advantages to making new friends with high end Class As is that they are happy to share their can’t-do-without, must-haves. Like watching the LA Rams-New Orlean Saints football playoff game on their large screen outside television.
We also learned from one of the Quartzsite veterans that the first two days of The Big Tent show are the worst for crowds.
We’ll close this post with an interesting observation:
Just so you have a smidgen of empathy for us, out here in the desert, we have to do “lawn maintenance” several times a week due to all the sand and grit.
