Goodbye Casa Grande
Thursday, 14 March
After 18 consecutive nights at Casa Grande (a record stay length for Sprinty), we headed out early this morning for west Tucson. Based on a recommendation from someone we played golf with a couple weeks ago, we had a tee time at Quarry Pines Golf Course on the NW side of Tucson. The course is at an old quarry, with most of the holes along the quarry rim, and several holes down inside the quarry.
While it was pricier than we normally prefer, we thought it would be a great memory. It was. Very picturesque, and one of our playing partners said that as nice Tucson golf courses go, this one is considered a bargain.
The tee sheet was completely full (as expected) and we were paired up with Mark and Steve, two guys who have played the course several times before. What made it a good pairing was that Mark and Darrell both were hitting from the silver tees, and Steve and Kris were both hitting from the copper tees.
We both started off okay, with Darrell making two pars to take a two stroke lead. A lead that was short lived. Kris tied it up by the 6th hole, and we made the turn tied. The back nine was a lot more target golf - Darrell was only able to hit his normal tee shot (3 wood) on one of the holes due to the placement of landing areas, and narrow fairways with little room for being off line just a little bit. Both Darrell and Steve contributed several balls to the depths of the quarry canyons, which did nothing to help their score. Darrell took some comfort in playing the final hole very well - and wishing he had played 7 other holes on the back nine as well.
Kris paid up at the nearby Starbucks, then we were off to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base to secure a site for two nights at the FamCamp on base. As expected, we were placed in an overflow site (no hookups), and took comfort in the $11/night and the fact that Sprinty is an experienced dry camper. Sprinty got cleaned up from the day he was out driving in the rain - getting ready to show off next week.
